S.T. Game 11. Yanks fall 9-5. Besides Seve, CC to miss start of season too. Would Yanks use “opener”?

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yanks lost to the Cardinals, 9-5 today, to drop the spring training record to 5-5-1.

We know that Seve will miss time, and now the Yanks have said that because of the knee surgery and stent put in, that CC will begin the season on the injured list. Remember that once activated, CC has a five-game suspension to serve.

So two of the five starters will NOT be starting the season. As of now, GM Brian Cashman wants to plug from within, meaning no Dallas Keuchel, Gio Gonzalez or Edwin Jackson.

Gonzalez has been rumored to be someone the Yanks might consider, but he’d have to agree to a bullpen move once Severino and CC are ready.

I like Loaisiga, and he shows great potential to step in as a spot starter now, and to replace CC in the rotation in 2020, but he is a raw talent. 5 out of his 7 outs today K’s, but gave up 5 Runs in 2 1/3.

With both Severino and CC out, we are looking at Cessa, German and/or Loaisiga filling those two spots unless the Yanks sign someone.

Loaisiga (Johnny Lasagna) had mixed results today. Good: 5 K in 2 1/3 IP. Bad: 5 runs given up.

Austin Romine had a 3-run HR today, Gleyber Torres 2 hits. Prospect Trey Amburgey had 2 RBI.

Loaisiga (L) 2 1/3 IP, 4 R, 3 H, 2 W, 5 K. Gave up 1 HR
Harvey (BS) 2/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Chapman 1 IP, 0 R , 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Coulombe 1 1/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 W, 1 K.
Diehl 1 1/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 W, 2 K.
Coshow 2/3 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 0 W, 0 K. Gave up 1 HR
Reeves 1 2/3 IP, 0 R , 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.

With Seve out until maybe late April, and CC out until about that time, could the Yanks, with their strong bullpen, consider an “opener” for a game or two in April?

Steven Wright of Boston drew an 80 game suspension (and would miss the postseason) for HGH ban. Hmm, why would a knuckleballer need HGH?

Jacoby Ellsbury (the Nowhere Man) is expected to join the Yanks in Tampa around March 17.

Hicks is still recovering from back pain.

The Yanks sent Domingo Acevedo down to Trenton, and sent Trevor Stephan and Brady Lail to minor league camp.

S.T. Game 9 (Away game of S/S). Voit homers but Yanks lose, 5-2.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yanks had a split squad today. For the sake of clarification, I made the home game S.T. Game 8 and the away game S.T. Game 9.

This is the away game, which the Yanks lost 5-2 to Toronto. They are 4-4-1 this spring training so far.

Luke Voit hit a solo HR.

D.J. LeMahieu had an RBI single.

Domingo German pitched well.

German 2 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 W, 4 K.
Coulombe 1/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 W, 1 K. Gave up HR (to ex-Yank Billy McKinney)
Hutchison 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 1 K.
Stephan (L, BS) 1 1/3 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 H, 1 W, 0 K. Gave up HR.
Coshow 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K.
Sosebee 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 3 K.

Second bad outing for Stephan.

S.T. Game 2. Loaisiga, Wade and Voit spark Yanks to 8-5 win.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

No offense to guys trying to make the team or even to stay in the majors or even AAA like a Nestor Cortes (who took the loss yesterday), Drew Hutchinson or Danny Colombe, but I was more interested in two pitchers who pitched TODAY.

One was Jonathan Loaisiga, who started a few games for the Yanks in 2018 and who I was very impressed with. Loaisiga is probably their sixth starter right now, someone to be used in case of injury/emergency, and someone who is being groomed now to take CC’s spot in the rotation in 2020.

Loaisiga pitched two no-run, no-hit innings today. Just what I wanted to see.

The other guy I was interested in was Stephen Tarpley, who came up at the end of 2018 and who posted a 3.00 ERA after a successful minor league season. He had a nice inning of work today as well.

Other pitchers I didn’t concern myself too much with. Call me when the regulars pitch.

As for position players, a GREAT day for Tyler Wade and for Luke Voit.

So far, the first base battle is interesting. Bird had a double and single yesterday. Today, Voit rose to the challenge with a RBI single and a 3-run HR.

As for Wade, a double yesterday, and 3 hits today, including two doubles. He has not hit a lick in 2017 or 2018 for the Yankees but the Yanks are still high on him with his speed, versatility and his lefty bat. He needs to prove himself this year, however, since time is running out.

Matt Lipka also had a 2-run HR for the Yanks today.

Hale was with the Yanks last year, released, went to the Twins, released, back to the Yanks, I think went to Korea ….bounced around a a lot.

Loaisiga 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 2 K.  (W)
Hale 2 IP, 0 r, 1 H, 0 w,. 3 K.
Stephan 2/3 Ip, 3 R, 4 H, 0 W, 1 K. Gave up 3 HR.
Lail 1 1/3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 0 W, 0 K. Gave up 1 HR.
Alvarez  2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.  (was in low A Charleston in 2018)
Tarpley 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 0 K.

Trevor Stephan was terrible, giving up 3 HR and not even lasting an inning. Brady Lail gave up a HR too.

But I was most interested in Loaisiga (who we nicknamed Johnny Lasagna last year) and Tarpley.

And those guys succeeded.

Not everyone makes the team, and some guys you just know are years away.

It’s why I target certain players in spring training to see how they do and the most important ones, Loaisiga, Tarpley, Wade, Voit, all passed with flying colors today.
