Minor League Report. Deivi so-so in SWB loss. Tampa’s Stephan throws a 7-inning no-hitter. Gil impresses again.

cropped-the-stadium-facade.jpg

AAA: With trade rumors swirling as we approach the trade deadline, I wonder how many scouts were in attendance to watch Deivi Garcia? How many not only here but elsewhere (see Luis Gil below) checking out players for a possible deal?

SWB (60-44) lost 4-2. 1B Mike Ford 2 hits, solo HR.

Deivi Garcia (AAA L, 1-1, 5.14) 6 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 2 W, 4 K. Gave up 2 HR.

Garcia is just 20, the youngest player in AAA. For the season, A+-AA and AAA, he is 5-6, but with a 3.38 ERA and 128 K in 82 2/3 IP.

AA: Trenton (55-47) won 2-1. CF Ben Ruta 2 hits. DH Mandy Alvarez 2 hits, RBI.

Kriske (S, 9) 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 W, 1 K.  1.54

High A: Tampa (46-57) swept a DH, and Trevor Stephan hrew a 7-inning no-hitter in the regularly scheduled game. (Minor league DHs are 7-inning games)

Reg. Sched. Game: Won 2-0. LF Pablo Olivares 2 hits. DH Alexander Palma 2-run HR for the only runs of the game. SS Diego Castillo 2 hits. 3B Wilkerman Garcia 2 hits.

Trevor Stephan (W, 1-3, 5.48) 7 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 9 K. Only an error by 1B Stephen Sensley kept this from being a perfect game.

Makeup of 7/25 rainout: Won 4-3. CF Estevan Florial 2 hits, 2 RBI. 2B Oswaldo Cabrera 2 RBI.

Luis Gil (W, 1-0, 3.00) 6 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 2 W, 5 K.
Blanton (S, 1) 1 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 W, 2 K.  3.24

Gil is 21, RHP. Between Low A Charleston and High A Tampa, 5-5, 2.43 this season. 117 K in 89 innings. Besides Deivi Garcia, another kid to keep an eye on.

Low A: Charleston (51-54) lost 4-3. CF Brandon Lockridge 3 hits, RBI.

Here is hoping the very young Deivi Garcia and also Luis Gil continue to develop. Could both be future rotation fixtures? Let’s hope the Yanks develop these kids well. Hopefully they won’t have to be included in a deal.

Minor League Report. Dominating pitching at AA, lower levels.

Stephen Tarpley the “opener” had as much (or little, depending on how you look at it) success as he had when he was the “opener” out in London. 2 IP, gave up 4 runs, 2 HR. The bullpen (3 different pitchers) with five scoreless IP.

AA: Trenton (46-39) won 3-0 on a 3-hitter. Trenton only got 3 hits themselves.

Low A: Charleston (45-43) lost 5-2 despite pitching a 2-hitter. LF Canaan Smith 2 hits. 3B Welfrin Mateo 2 hits, RBI.

Charleston starter Luis Gil had a no-hitter through five, but started the sixth inning off by walking the first three batters then giving up a bases-clearing double.

Trenton’s Deivi Garcia started for the AL in the Futures Game. He pitched one inning, 1-2-3, a K and two pop-ups. Looked good. Nice fast ball, good break on the curve.

Minor League Report. SWB slugs way to DH Sweep. Trenton & Tampa pitch shutouts.

cropped-the-stadium-facade.jpg

The Yanks signed soon-to-be 39 year old C Erik Kratz for catching depth. He is now with SWB. The journeyman catcher was with the Yanks in 2017 and got into four games that year with them.

Low A: Charleston (34-29) lost 3-2. LF Canaan Smith 2 for 2, 2 walks (.318). DH Omar Carrizales 2 hits.

Minor League Report.

cropped-the-stadium-facade.jpg

AAA: SWB (8-8) lost 8-1, getting only three hits. Remember, with all the injuries and callups that the Yanks have, that there is a trickle-down effect. A lot of guys who would be playing here, the Ford’s, Estrada’s, Tauchman’s…. are with the big club because of the injuries the big club has.

Solo HR SS Gosuke Katoh. Nestor Cortes 4 R, 4 IP with the loss.

AA: Trenton (10-6) lost both games of a DH.

Game 1: 6-4 loss. 2B Hoy Jun Park 2 hits. RF Ben Ruta 2 hits, 2 RBI. 1B Chris Gittens 2 hits, 2 RBI. CF Rashad Crawford 2 hits. Trevor Stephan 6 R, 4 2/3 IP (L).

Low A: Charleston (8-11) lost 5-2. 3B Nelson Gomez 2 RBI but made 2 errors.

S.T. Game 11. Yanks fall 9-5. Besides Seve, CC to miss start of season too. Would Yanks use “opener”?

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yanks lost to the Cardinals, 9-5 today, to drop the spring training record to 5-5-1.

We know that Seve will miss time, and now the Yanks have said that because of the knee surgery and stent put in, that CC will begin the season on the injured list. Remember that once activated, CC has a five-game suspension to serve.

So two of the five starters will NOT be starting the season. As of now, GM Brian Cashman wants to plug from within, meaning no Dallas Keuchel, Gio Gonzalez or Edwin Jackson.

Gonzalez has been rumored to be someone the Yanks might consider, but he’d have to agree to a bullpen move once Severino and CC are ready.

I like Loaisiga, and he shows great potential to step in as a spot starter now, and to replace CC in the rotation in 2020, but he is a raw talent. 5 out of his 7 outs today K’s, but gave up 5 Runs in 2 1/3.

With both Severino and CC out, we are looking at Cessa, German and/or Loaisiga filling those two spots unless the Yanks sign someone.

Loaisiga (Johnny Lasagna) had mixed results today. Good: 5 K in 2 1/3 IP. Bad: 5 runs given up.

Austin Romine had a 3-run HR today, Gleyber Torres 2 hits. Prospect Trey Amburgey had 2 RBI.

Loaisiga (L) 2 1/3 IP, 4 R, 3 H, 2 W, 5 K. Gave up 1 HR
Harvey (BS) 2/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Chapman 1 IP, 0 R , 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Coulombe 1 1/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 W, 1 K.
Diehl 1 1/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 W, 2 K.
Coshow 2/3 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 0 W, 0 K. Gave up 1 HR
Reeves 1 2/3 IP, 0 R , 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.

With Seve out until maybe late April, and CC out until about that time, could the Yanks, with their strong bullpen, consider an “opener” for a game or two in April?

Steven Wright of Boston drew an 80 game suspension (and would miss the postseason) for HGH ban. Hmm, why would a knuckleballer need HGH?

Jacoby Ellsbury (the Nowhere Man) is expected to join the Yanks in Tampa around March 17.

Hicks is still recovering from back pain.

The Yanks sent Domingo Acevedo down to Trenton, and sent Trevor Stephan and Brady Lail to minor league camp.

S.T. Game 9 (Away game of S/S). Voit homers but Yanks lose, 5-2.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yanks had a split squad today. For the sake of clarification, I made the home game S.T. Game 8 and the away game S.T. Game 9.

This is the away game, which the Yanks lost 5-2 to Toronto. They are 4-4-1 this spring training so far.

Luke Voit hit a solo HR.

D.J. LeMahieu had an RBI single.

Domingo German pitched well.

German 2 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 W, 4 K.
Coulombe 1/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 W, 1 K. Gave up HR (to ex-Yank Billy McKinney)
Hutchison 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 1 K.
Stephan (L, BS) 1 1/3 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 H, 1 W, 0 K. Gave up HR.
Coshow 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K.
Sosebee 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 3 K.

Second bad outing for Stephan.
