Minor League Report. Andujar homers on Rehab stint. Also, a special moment remembered.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Before I get into the minor league report, I would like to comment on the picture you see above. Gene Stephens, a backup/platoon OF who played in the majors for Boston (1952-1953, 1955-1960), Baltimore (1960-1961) the KC A’s (1961-1962) and Chicago White Sox (1963-1964) was a .240 hitter, 37 MLB HR, OPS+ 83. His 162 game average was .240-6-35. 12 years in the majors, nothing really significant about his career, except…

THIS photo.

This photo was taken on August 12, 1964. Mel Stottlemyre made his MLB debut against the White Sox, winning the game, and Stephens is the centerfielder for the White Sox that day looking up at a HR hit by Mickey Mantle that went over the 461 ft. sign and ALSO the fence and screen which combined were about 23 ft. high. It was said to be a 502 ft. shot.

Stephens just passed away a few days ago on April 27, age 86. I thought you’d like to know the story and see the photo.

AAA: SWB (12-12) won 7-3. SS/2B Gosuke Katoh (.366) 3 hits. 2 doubles, HR. C Ryan Lavarnway 2 RBI. 3B Mandy Alvarez 3 hits, 2 RBI. David Hale the W. 3-0, 2.38.

High A: Tampa (12-15) won 6-5. 3B Miguel Andujar, on rehab, 2 for 2 with a 2-run HR. 1B Dermis Garcia solo HR.

Dalton Higgins 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 3 K.    1.93

The minors today.

AAA: If you have been watching the U.S. Open, you may know that we are about to start building arks in the Northeast. SWB had a DH rained out today.

AA: Trenton swept a dh. 9-3 in Game 1. Jason Stephens 6 ip, 3 r. Montero 2-4, double, rbi. Jorge Vazquez 3-4, HR, 3 rbi. Chris Malec solo hr.  Four other players 2 hits each, Eduardo Nunez one of them and with 2 rbi.

Game 2: 3-0 win. 2 doubles, rbi for Noah Hall. 2 singles, rbi for Vazquez.

A+: No game for Tampa.

A-: Charleston loses 5-2. Venditte gave up an unearned run. Jose Pirela and Neall French each had 3 hits.  Dave Phelps 3 r in 6 ip.

The minors tonight.

AAA: SWB 7-3. 6 2/3 for Igawa, 2 R, 8 K. (6-1, 3.93). Melancon 2 2/3, 2.48 ERA. 1 unearned run. John Rodriguez 2 hits, HR, 4 rbi. Miranda 3 hits, 2 rbi. A-Jax 2 hits, .348.

AA: Trenton shut out 4-0. McAllister 7 1/3, 4 R, 3 ER, 8 K. 5-3, 1.81. Just two hits for Trenton.

A+:  Tampa loses 9-7. Jason Stephens 8 r in 5 1/3.  2 hits, HR, 3 RBI Brandon Laird.

A-: Charleston lost 3-2. Venditte is human. 2/3 of an inning. Gave up the winning run (triple, SF). Venditte drops to 2-2, 0.94.

The minors last night.

AAA: SWB won 9-4. NOW, Edwar and Alby do it. Sigh….  Igawa gave up 4 in 3 2/3. Albaladejo and Edwar combined for 5 2/3 scoreless and hitless innings of relief, NO WALKS and 7 K. Todd Linden and Justin Leone each had HRs and 2 RBI. 2 RBI also for Shelley Duncan and Doug Bernier.

AA: The “Truth,” Josh, was at this game, checking out Montero. He said that the 19-year old Montero sure doesn’t have a A/AA body. He described Montero’s thighs as being like Pujols’s and that the sound off the youngster’s bat was different. That good kind of different. He saw Montero single to right. Josh also stated that four scouts were checking out McAllister, who was usually around 91. Good thing Josh left after six because Trenton blew it, giving up 4 in the bottom of the 9th to lose 6-3. A one-out grand slam, to boot.

McAllister went six, giving up 2 R, 1 ER. 5 hits, 2 walks, 1 K. 1 HR. His ERA is now at 1.60. Montero was 2 for 3 (5 for 21 since being promoted to AA).

A+:  Tampa lost 9-4. Jason Stephens knocked out in the 2nd.

A-:   Charleston lost 5-4. Three players with 2 hits each.

Minors tonight

Before I get to the minors, I saw a couple of interesting things in the majors.

Our old buddy (cough, cough, cough) Carl Pavano started for the Indians today. 1 IP, 9 R.

Predict the day he hits the DL for the first time.

Chris Carpenter, who helped lead the Cards to the 2006 WS title only to miss almost all of 2007 and 2008, had a nice comeback, giving up only one hit today.

Lastly, I’m out and what is on? The Giants and Brewers on the MLB package (I think they had a free preview or something). In the 9th, Mike Cameron lines one off the Giants’ pitchers’ noggin’. Ouch.

AAA: SWB beat LV, 11-3. 3 hits, HR, 5 RBI for Juan Miranda. Todd LInden and Shelley Duncan 2 RBI each. Nice outing by Melancon.

Juan Valdez

Pinstripe Prospects: The Minor League Report.

AAA: Jason Jones was called up from Trenton to take the start that would have been Kennedy’s. Pinstripe Prospects: The minor League Report. Kennedy due for a callup?
