S.T. game 29. Yanks lose to Toronto, 10-6.

For most of 2013, Preston Claiborne was a revelation. From his MLB debut on May 5th, right through Sept. 3, his ERA was 2.74. 38 games, 0-1, 2.74. Solid.

But in his last six appearances, from Sept. 3rd on, he was 0-1, 18.69. That is as ugly as ugly can be.

Today he got no one out and gave up six runs as the Yanks lost to Toronto 10-6. His S.T. ERA is 14.29. It’s safe to say he won’t be making the team.

You wonder if he is healthy. What a dropoff.

For the second day in a row, Joe Girardi pitched a bunch of scrubs as he lines up his rotation to start the season. Scott LeRoux started and gave up 2 R in 3 IP.

Matt Daley got an out, and Fred Lewis, who had an outside shot at the 2nd lefty in the bullpen role, probably blew it by giving up 2 in 2/3 of an inning.

Then Claiborne could not get any one out and gave up six runs.

Jim Miller, Dellin Betances,  Danny Burawa and Yoshinori Tateyama each pitched a scoreless inning. It would be shocking if Betances, who has had a great spring, does not make it.

Carlos Beltran had two hits and 2 rbi.  Kelly Johnson drove in 2 runs.

With Brendan Ryan hurt, Dean Anna and Yangervis Solarte each have a shot at making the team. Solarte was 1 for 1 today, raising his spring average to .459— but he is NOT on the 40 man roster. Anna was 1 for 2 with an RBI and has hit .297 this spring. He IS on the 40-man. Zelous Wheeler doesn’t play SS like the other two can. He has hit .324 this spring.

One scout states that the 40-year-old Ichiro has looked terrible this spring. The Yanks would like to dump him and would pick up part of his salary. If they do dump Ichiro,  Adonis Garcia has hit .419 this spring, and Zoilo Almonte .361.

S.T. Game 26. Yanks beat Twins, 5-4.

Masahiro Tanaka didn’t seem to have his great stuff today, but he still battled as the Yanks won 5-3 over the Twins today.

Tanaka came close to giving up a grand slam, and did give up 3 r in 5 2/3 ip. He gave up 5 h, walked one, hit one and struck out six.

He does seem like a guy who can win without his best stuff. I like what I’ve seen from him so far. You wondered if the hype (24-0, 1.27 in Japan last year) was overblown. This guy looks like he will help and help big. Fred Lewis got the last out in the sixth.

David Herndon pitched a scoreless seventh and Shane Greene a scoreless eighth. Greene struck out the side.

Yoshinori Tateyama gave up a HR in the 9th, but struck out the side..

Scott Sizemore drove in two runs for the Yanks, and Yangervis Solarte got another hit as he tries to make the team what with Brennan Ryan being out with an injury. He went 1 for 1 and is at .471 for the spring. His major competition, Dean Anna, went 1 for 3. Zoilo Almonte went 2 for 4, and Zelous Wheeler was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

The Yanks’ spring record is now 15-9-2.

S.T. Game 19. Yanks no-hit down in Panama, lose 5-0

The Yanks have a split squad in Panama to play two games and to honor Mo.

Tonight, that team got no hits in losing 5-0.

Adam Warren started and pitched well in his bid for the #5 starter spot. 4 1/3 IP, 1R, 2 H, 0 walks and 6 K. Great job.

Chase Whitley gave up a run in an inning of work.

Matt Daley, 1 2/3, no runs. Brian Coello, who has stunk this spring (sorry, being honest), 3 R, 2 ER in 1/3 of an inning. Coello’s ERA this spring? 33.00

Yoshinori Tateyama,  no runs in 2/3 and Jim Miller no runs in 1 IP.

The Yanks record this spring is now 8-9-2.

The lineup did have Gardner, Jeter, Beltran, Soriano, Sanchez, Cervelli  & Almonte in it.

S.T. Game 14. Yanks, Tigers tie at 7

Hiroki Kuroda wasn’t good today, and the Yanks staged a late comeback to tie the Tigers 7-7 in a 10-inning affair.

The Yanks’ S.T. record so far is 7-5-2.

Kuroda really struggled, going 3 2/3, giving up 6 R, 10 H, 0 walks and 1 K. Chase Whitley went 1/3, scoreless.

Shawn Kelley, Jose Campos, Fred Lewis, and Danny Burawa then each pitched a scoreless inning. Robert Coello gave up an unearned run in his inning of work. Yoshinori Tateyama pitched a scoreless inning.

There are rumors that Francisco Cervelli could be dealt because of the Yanks’ backup C surplus (Gary Sanchez was optioned to AA Trenton today, and the Yanks still have Austin Romine and John Ryan Murphy for backup or AAA). Cervelli hit 2 HR today. He is 8 for 16 for the spring with 3 HR. After being suspended 50 games last year for the Biogenesis thing, I can hear the snickers about his S.T. numbers.

Zoilo Almonte was 2 for 2, including a 2-run HR that tied the game in the bottom of the 9th.

Yangervis Solarte is having an INCREDIBLE spring training. Another hit and his batting average is .632 this spring.

Zelous Wheeler had 2 RBI.

Ervin Santana finally found a home. 1 yr. deal w/Atlanta for $14.1 MM.
