ALCS Game 1. Tee-Time! Tanaka and Torres lead Yanks to 7-0 win.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Masahiro Tanaka came into the game with the rep of being a big-game postseason pitcher with a 1.54 ERA.

That ERA was lowered Saturday night with a brilliant, one-hit, shutout performance over six innings as the Yankees beat the Astros in Game 1 of the ALCS, 7-0.

Gleyber Torres continues to remind people of Derek Jeter when it comes to his poise, maturity, and delivering in a key moment at such a young age. Torres drove in five of the Yankees’ seven runs.

The Yanks scored first in the fourth inning when D.J. LeMahieu singled, went to second on a WP and scored on a Torres double.

In the bottom of the fifth, Aaron Judge caught a liner and doubled off the runner on first. Great defensive play.

Home runs by Torres and Giancarlo Stanton in the sixth made it 3-0 Yankees.

With two out in the seventh, Gio Urshela and D.J. singled. Judge singled to load the bases and Torres dunked in a single to make it 5-0.

In the ninth, Urshela homered to make it 6-0. An out later, LeMahieu walked and Judge singled him to third. Judge stole second, and Torres’ RBI groundout made it 7-0.

LeMahieu 2 hits, scored 3 runs.
Judge 2 hits, made the great defensive play for a DP
Torres 3 hits, HR, 5 RBI
Stanton 2 hits, solo HR
Urshela 2 hits, solo HR

Tanaka (WINNER) 6 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 W, 4 K.  Brilliant
Ottavino 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 W, 0 K.
Britton 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 2 K.
Loaisiga 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K.

In the NLCS Game 2, St. Louis is in trouble. They lost both Games 1 and 2 at home and are down 0-2 in the series. In the two games the Cardinals have a TOTAL of four hits. They lost Game 2, 3-1. Max Scherzer 7 IP, 1 H, 11 K. Adam Wainwright pitched well for St. Louis, 11 K in 7 1/3, but the Cards bats are dead.

Adam Eaton 2 RBI for Washington, and a solo HR for Michael Taylor.

The Washington Nationals took game 1 of the NLCS, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 on a one-hitter.

The only Cardinals hit was by PH Jose Martinez with two outs in the eighth inning.

Washington starter Anibal Sanchez was then removed from the game.

Howie Kendrick and Yan Gomes each had two hits and an RBI for the Nationals.

Game 2 of the NLCS will be at 4 PM today.

The ALCS between the Yankees and Astros begins tonight. Game 1 at 8 PM.

Sammy Taylor, a C who was on the 1962 Mets, died at the age of 86. Taylor played for the Cubs (1958-1962), Mets (1962-1963), Reds (1963) and Indians (1963). His best year was when he hit 13 HR for the 1959 Cubs. He hit .222-3-20 in 68 games for those 1962 Mets. For his career, he hit .245 with 33 HR, OPS+ 84.

Dodgers repeat as NL Champs; WS to start in Boston on Tuesday.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Los Angeles Dodgers repeated as NL Champs, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 on Saturday night, and are headed to Boston, where the World Series will begin on Tuesday night.

Christan Yelich, the second batter of the game, homered for the Brewers in the first, but it was all the Brewers would get. Yelich hails from my sister’s town in California.

But Cody Bellinger, the NLCS MVP, hit a 2-run HR for the Dodgers in the top of the second.

Chris Taylor made a fabulous catch in left field in the bottom of the fifth to keep the score at 2-1, and in the top of the sixth, Yasiel Puig hit a 3-run HR to ice the game for LA.

It will be the second time the Red Sox and Dodgers will have met in the World Series. In the only other time, 1916, the Dodgers were in Brooklyn, and were known as the Brooklyn Robins. Boston took that series in five games, and one of Boston’s stars was a 21 yr. old lefty pitcher named Babe Ruth.

Meanwhile, today, October 21, is the 90th birthday of the Chairman of the Board, Whitey Ford.

Wayne Krenchicki, a utility infielder in the 1980s, passed away Tuesday, age 64.

NFL great Dick Modzelewski, DT for the Redskins, Steelers, Giants and Browns from 1953-1966, died Friday, age 87. He played in the NFL Title Game in 1956, 1958, 1959, 1961, 1962, 1963 (all Giants), 1964 and 1965 (Browns). His teams won in 1956 and 1964. After retiring, he was a long-time assistant coach in the NFL, inc. for the 1981 Bengals team that reached the Super Bowl. He was the interim head coach of the Browns for the final game of the 1977 season. The Browns lost to Seattle, 20-19 (Wikipedia).

Boston evens ALCS at 1 game each, Sale hospitalized.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Boston won Game 2, 7-5 over Houston, to even the ALCS at one game each.

Boston does have a new concern. From mlb.com:

Red Sox ace Chris Sale was sent to Massachusetts General Hospital with a stomach illness on Sunday, and he didn’t travel with the team to Houston, where the American League Championship Series against the Astros will resume on Tuesday.

The Red Sox are hopeful he will be ok to start Game 5 on Thursday.

Game 3 of the NLCS between Milwaukee and the Dodgers is today. That series is also tied.

NFL great Jim Taylor, fullback for the Lombardi Packers of the 1960s, died Saturday morning at the age of 83. #31 for those teams, he was on the 1961, 1962, 1965 NFL champs as well as the Super Bowl I (1966) champs. He scored the first TD in Super Bowl history. He was the one Chuck Bednarik tackled at the 9-yd. line when the Eagles beat the Packers 17-13 for the NFL Championship, and Taylor also won the NFL rushing title in 1962—the only year Jim Brown (1957-1965) did NOT lead the league in rushing.

Dodgers force WS Game 7 with 3-1 win. AFL action also.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The third oldest Stadium in the majors, Dodger Stadium, which opened in 1962, will finally host a World Series Game 7 because the Dodgers forced that game by beating Houston 3-1 Tuesday night.

Houston’s George Springer hit his fourth HR of the WS in the third, giving Houston a 1-0 lead.

But LA touched Justin Verlander in the sixth for two runs. Austin Barnes singled and Chase Utley was HBP. Chris Taylor doubled in one run and Corey Seager hit a SF for another.

Joc Pederson’s HR in the seventh gave LA an insurance run.

In the Arizona Fall League, Scottsdale won 6-2. Yankees’ prospects:

CF Estevan Florial 0 for 3 w/a walk. Scored a run. .293.
1B Billy McKinney 0 for 3, RBI. .282
SS Thairo Estrada 1 for 3, walk, scored a run. .354.

Boras, Ellsbury, the AFL and WS Game 1.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Scott Boras is known as a top-notch agent.

He inflates the importance of players to get them ridiculous salaries they don’t deserve, and at a commission.

Often, these salaries are for too long, for too much, and is a burden on the teams that fall for Boras’ BS.

One such example is with Jacoby Ellsbury. Ellsbury probably has the worst contract with the Yankees right now, and maybe in all of baseball.

In 2013, Ellsbury helped the Red Sox to a WS title, and made $9MM that year. After the season, the free agent signed with the Yankees for seven years with an option for an eighth at a little over $21MM per year. Nice jump.

And little production since. The oft-injured CF has averaged .264-10-50 with 26 SB a year in his four seasons with the Yankees, and lost his CF job. His OPS+ is 95. 5% below league average, and he is not known for his throwing arm, either.

$21MM for a fourth OF/DH. One with average stats, nice speed, not the greatest arm. And three more guaranteed years on his contract.

One who this season hit .264-7-39 with 22 SB and who went 0 for 9 in the postseason.

One who hasn’t hit .270, hit 10 HR, driven in 60, stolen 25 bases or has had an OPS+ of 100 (league average) in any of the last three years.

So Bore-A$$ starts complaining about his playing time.

Hey Bore-a$$, shut up. Continue fleecing teams for your 15% commission or whatever you get and stop trying to be their manager.

As for Ellsbury, maybe he last a comeback in him at age 34. But the last three years don’t signify that. The Yanks would love to dump his salary if they could, even if they have to eat most of it.

A bad deal. Bore-a$$ should just laugh his way to the bank, having found a sucker who signed Ellsbury for that much.

And he should just STFU about playing time.

In the Arizona Fall League, Scottsdale won 3-1. Yankees prospects:

RF Estevan Florial 0 for 4, struck out 3x.
1B Billy McKinney 2 for 4 with a strikeout.
SS Thairo Estrada 1 for 4, solo HR, one strikeout.

Starting Pitcher Albert Abreu 5 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 0 W, 4 K. Gave up 1 HR.
Relief pitcher Andrew Schwaab 1 IP, 0 r, 0 H, 1 W, 0 K.
Relief Pitcher Cody Carroll (S, 2) 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 3 K.

In WS Game 1, LA beat Houston 3-1. Chris Taylor hit Dallas Keuchel’s first pitch of the game for a 447 ft. HR. Houston tied it in the fourth on a HR by Alex Bregman but in the bottom of the sixth, Justin Turner’s 2-run HR was the deciding blow. Clayton Kershaw outduelled Keuchel. Kershaw went 7 innings, giving up one run on three hits, and struck out 11.

Dodgers win NL pennant, first time since 1988.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

If the Yankees win Game 6 or 7 in Houston and make it to the WS, they now know who they will face.

The Dodgers.

Thanks to a 3-HR, 7 RBI night by Enrique Hernandez, including a grand slam, the Dodgers won the NL Pennant for the first time since 1988. Since they had the best record in baseball this season, winning 104 games, they will have home field advantage in the World Series.

The Dodgers won 11-1 in Game 5 to close out the NLCS four games to one.

The co-mvps of the NLCS were Chris Taylor and Justin Taylor of the Dodgers. Hernandez’ great night couldn’t give him that.

The Tigers named a new manager, former Twins manager Ron Gardenhire.

In the Arizona Fall League, Scottsdale won 13-7. As for Yankees’ prospects, a GREAT NIGHT.

3B Kyle Holder: 4 for 6, triple, HR, scored 2, drove in 3 runs.
1B Billy McKinney 1 for 4, rbi.
SS Thairo Estrada 2 for 5,
RF Estevan Florial 3 for 5, HR shy of the cycle. 2 RBI.
