Minor League Report. Waldichuk dominates at AA.

A concerning thing is that some Yankees’ prospects are off to very slow starts. In fact, there is an article (I think from NJ.com) on the internet about the regression of Jasson Dominguez, the Martian.

Ken Waldichuk isn’t one of them, however. Read on.

Games 26 & 27. Yanks split a DH with Texas.

Before the Mother’s Day DH against Texas, a couple of moves. Tim Locastro goes on the IL with a back injury, and with the Yanks playing 23 games in 22 days, Ron Marinaccio was brought up. Also, for the DH only, Estevan Florial was brought up.

The Yanks (19-8) didn’t hit much Sunday, and split a DH with Texas.

Game 1: Gleyber Torres hit a walkoff HR (4) in the bottom of the ninth as the Yanks won 2-1. The Yanks didn’t get a hit until the sixth inning, when Aaron Judge singled, Anthony Rizzo singled Judge to third, and Giancarlo Stanton hit a SF.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Gerrit Cole gave up a HR to the last batter he faced (pitch #114. One batter too many? But then Cole did strike out the previous hitter on three pitches) and the score was tied. Torres led off the bottom of the ninth with his game-winning blow. The Yanks only had five hits in this game.

Torres 2 hits, RBI. Solo GW HR (4)

Cole 6 1/3 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 1 W, 10 K. Gave up 1 HR. 2.67
Loaisiga 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 2 K. 4.63
Holmes (W, 3-0) 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 2 K. 0.64

Game 2: Michael King has been great all year, but maybe he was due for a clunker. Yanks lose 4-2.

The Yanks only had three hits in this game. They took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a 2-run HR by Giancarlo Stanton (6).

Yankees’ starter Jordan Montgomery gave up a HR in the top of the sixth and Texas had cut the Yanks’ lead to 2-1.

In the seventh, Montgomery gave up a leadoff double. King came in and gave up a walk, but then got a strikeout and a forceout. It looked like King was going to get out of it and would be the dominating King we have seen all year. But then a WP tied the game, and on the next pitch, King gave up a 2-run HR that made it 4-2 Texas, and that turned out to be the final score.

Stanton 2-run HR (6)

Montgomery 6+ IP, 2 R, 4 H, 0 W, 5 K. Gave up 1 HR. 1 HBP 2.90
King (L, 2-1; BS, 1) 1 1/3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 w, 3 K. Gave up 1 HR. 1 WP 1.42
Peralta 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K. 1.80

Spoiler Alert: I’ll post the minor league games of Sunday tomorrow, but you know how I’ve been writing about AA pitcher Ken Waldichuk. Check out what he did today. If no time, check my report tomorrow.

Rain wreaks havoc again. Here are some minor league results. Rortvedt begins rehab.

Rain Saturday washed out the Yankees game (to be made up Monday afternoon) as well as the games of their AA and High A farm teams. Here are the games that WERE played.

AAA: SWB (10-18) lost both games of a doubleheader.

Game 1: lost 9-2, getting just four hits.

D. Garcia (L, 0-2) 3 2/3 IP, 6 R, 4 ER, 4 H, 3 W, 4 K. gave up 1 HR. 2 WP 9.17 (#29 prospect)
McClain 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K. 6.52
Espinal 1 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 1 W, 0 K. 9.82

Is anyone else (I’m sure you all are) concerned about the regression of Deivi Garcia? Garcia is 3-9, 7.23 at AAA between last year and this. Garcia is still young, turning 23 in less than two weeks, but his regression is concerning. I think, based on recent results, it’s time to send Deivi down to AA and promote Ken Waldichuk (#6 prospect) from AA to AAA. Waldichuk is 2-0, 1.45 in four starts at AA this year, 28 K in 18 2/3 IP. Between 2021 and 2022, Waldichuk has gone 6-3, 3.67 at AA with 136 K in 98 IP.

Game 2: Lost 7-6 in 10 innings.
RF Phillip Evans 2 hits, 2 RBI. 2-run HR (2)
2B Jose Peraza 2 hits, RBI

Clarke Schmidt 2 1/3 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 2 W, 3 K. 3.86 (#7 prospect)
Mujica 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K. 13.50

M. Gomez (L, 1-1) 2 1/3 IP, 2 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 2 W, 2 K 1 HBP 2.13

Low A: Tampa (13-12) lost 3-2.

S.T. Game 2. Yanks Tie O’s, 3-3. C hurt. Trade rumors.

The Yanks (0-1-1 in spring training) tied Baltimore 3-3 on Saturday.

Newly acquired C Ben Rortvedt will probably miss the start of the season due to an oblique strain. This opens the door for Rodolfo Duran (who homered in Game 1), David Freitas (who homered yesterday) Max McDowell or Rob Brantly to start the season as Kyle Higashioka’s backup catcher unless the Yanks trade for one.

Speaking of trades, Miguel Andujar is on the block. He’s blocked in the Bronx by Rizzo, Gallo, Donaldson, LeMahieu and Kiner-Falefa. I’d expect him to be dealt soon.

Besides a 2-run HR by Freitas, the Yanks got a solo HR by Josh Donaldson yesterday.

Pitching:

Waldichuk 3 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 0 W, 1 K. a top pitching prospect
Holmes (BS) 2 2/3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 3 W, 3 K.
Barclay 2 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 1 K.
Greene 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.

Luis Severino is supposed to pitch today in the Yanks first home S.T. game.

Minor League action 9-18-21; Couple of Doubleheaders. Low A Tampa gets no-hit.

Both AAA SWB and Tampa had completions of suspended games as well as their regular games yesterday.

AAA: SWB (67-49)

DH Elijah Dunham (#24 prospect) 2 hits, RBI. 3B James Nelson 2 hits, but made 2 errors.

Low A Tampa (73-42)

Completion of suspended game from 9-16: Won 6-5. 2B Cooper Bowman (#30 prospect) 3 hits, RBI. 3B Roberto Chirinos 2 hits.

Regularly scheduled game: Lost 3-0, and got no-hit. (7 inning game).

Standings:

SWB 2nd in division, 3 games back
Somerset 1st by 2 1/2 games See below for Hudson Valley. First place in division still does not mean playoffs.
Hudson Valley 1st by 12 1/2. See below.

Hudson Valley still is OUT of the playoffs. The format for the 2021 Postseason will consist of two teams per league in a single best-of-5 series. The two playoff participants will be decided for each league (regardless of division) based on the best regular season winning percentage. (So if a 2nd place team in the other division has a higher winning pct., you are out).

Somerset, as of now, would make the playoffs by just 1/2 a game.

Tampa 1st by 3 1/2 games. Have clinched a playoff spot.
