Minor league news.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Hmmm…. could the Yanks be losing faith in either Didi Gregorious or Rob Refsnyder so early into the season? What about even Stephen Drew?

Gregorious is just 25, but has had a disappointing nine games with the Yanks so far. See this link:

He isn’t hitting (5 for 29, all singles, OPS+ 13), and has made some physical and mental mistakes. It’s early, but…

Meanwhile, Refsnyder, 24, raked in spring training but made six errors. Eight games into the AAA season, he has four errors already.

Come to think of it, outside of the 2 HR, one of which was the PH grand slam, Stephen Drew has gone just 4 for 27.

The reason I wonder about this is because of reports that the Yanks may be interested in Jose Peraza, a soon-to-be 21-year-old 2B/SS in the Braves system. Peraza doesn’t have power, but the righty hitter has plenty of speed. In 2013, he hit .288-1-47 with 64 SB in 114 games at A ball. Last year, between A+ and AAA, he hit .339-2-44 with 60 SB in 110 games. Peraza just began at AAA. Rumors are the Yanks may dangle Gary Sanchez for Peraza. Sanchez is at AA right now. Sanchez, 22, hit .270-13-65 at AA last year. There are concerns about his attitude and work ethic. Besides, the Yanks are more enamored with John Ryan Murphy right now (and since 2011, big free agent signing Brian McCann, 31, has hit only .237—McCann has three years and an option for a fourth after this this season. Get that batting average, up, Brian. )

AAA: Refsnyder made his fourth error in eight games as the SWB Railriders lost 10-2 today to drop their record to 2-6. I don’t know if Refsnyder’s fielding woes are starting to affect his hitting, but he is at .222. Eric Wooten 4 R in 4 IP, Jose De La Cruz, just sent down, 5 R, 3 ER in 2 IP.

AA:   Trenton scored a run in the bottom of the 9th to tie, and another in the bottom of the 10th to win 3-2. Aaron Judge 2 hits, walk-off HR. Mason Williams two hits, rbi. Miguel Sulbaran is a guy no one talks about much, but he went 5 2/3, 0 R, 2 H, 1 walk and 1 K. Sulbaran is a lefty who is just 21 and who has a nice minor league record so far.

High A: Tampa scored in the top of the 10th to win 7-6. 3B Vincente Conde a 3-run HR.

A: Charleston lost 8-3. 1B Connor Spencer 2 hits, RF Austin Aune 2 RBI.

AAA: SWB lost 9-7 to LV. 3B Zelous Wheeler (.305) 2 H, HR, 2 RBI. 1B Scott Sizemore 2 triples, 2 RBI. CF Taylor Dugas 2 hits, 2 rbi.

AA: Eric Wooten 6 1/3 scoreless IP in Trenton’s 2-0 win. 1B Pete O’Brien, 2 h, rbi, same for 2B Casey Stevenson. CC’s next rehab outing will be for Trenton on Thursday.

High A: Tampa off.

Low A: Charleston lost 4-2. Three players (DH Rey Nunez, 3B Miguel Andujar, and 2B Gosuke Katoh) with 2 hits each.

The Minors, 6-3-14

Lots of player movement due to injuries right now. A couple on the DL include Dean Anna and Ramon Flores.

AAA: SWB lost 7-6. 3B Zelous Wheeler and LF Russ Canzler 2 RBI each.

AA: Trenton won 8-3. Manny Banuelos two scoreless innings, 4 K, but he hasn’t been stretched out all year. The most he’s gone all year is just three innings. Eric Wooten 1 R in 6 IP. CF Mason Williams 3 h, 4 rbi. 2B Robert Refsnyder 2 H, 2 rbi, HR (.322). 2B of the future? (Roberts is 36, we don’t know where Solarte may go…. and (ugh) A-Rod returns next year (and turns 40 in July 2015)).

High A: Tampa lost 8-0, getting just two hits.

Low A: 8-7 loss for Charleston. SS Tyler Wade 3 h, 3 rbi. C Eduardo De Oleo with a HR.

The minors 5/29/14

AAA: SWB lost 6-5. 3B Zelous Wheeler 2 rbi.

AA: Trenton won 12-2. Manny Banuelos still coming back slowly. Two scoreless innings. Eric Wooten 7 IP, 2 r, 1 ER. LF/CF Ben Gamel 4 for 4. 2B Robert Refnsyder 2h, double, HR, 3 RBI. RF/LF Taylor Dugas 3h, triple, 3 rbi.

High A: Tampa lost 4-0. Chaz Hebert 6 IP, 1 r. SS Cito Culver 2 hits.

Low A: Charleston lost 4-1. 3B Jose Rosario 2 hits, double, HR.

Wednesday’s minors.

AAA: SWB won 3-1. Brian Gordon (2-2, 4.23) 7 Ip, 1 R, 7 h, 2 walks, 3 K. Jose Ramirez (keep an eye on him for a possible 2014 callup) and Matt Daley finished up. It was Ramirez’ first appearance of the year. He’s 24 and the team is high on him. Last year he was 2-6, 3.67 between AA/AAA with 78 K in 73 2/3 IP. Meanwhile, the Yanks released IF/OF Ronnier Mustelier. 3B Zelous Wheeler with a hit, rbi (.373).

AA: Trenton won 6-4 in 12 innings. Jairo Heredia 3 scoreless IP of relief, W, 6 K. Heredia, 24, is someone I’ve been following for a while. He missed all of 2012 with shoulder surgery. The Thunder got three two-run homers. One by DH Kyle Roller, one by 2B Rob Refsnyder and the game-winner by 1B Dan Fiorito. Roller, a 1b/dh who is 26, is at .392-9-23. He’s 6’1″, 250, and a lefty bat. Callup to AAA coming soon?

High A: Tampa got four in the eighth to win 4-2. Eric Wooten (2.89) 2 R, 7 IP. RF Pete O’Brien and 3B Eric Jagielo with back-to-back HR, O’Brien’s a 2-run shot. O’Brien is at .330-10-19. The righty-hitter will be 24 in July.

Low A: 5-4 loss for Charleston. DH Abiatal Avelino 4 for 4, 2 doubles, rbi. 1B Mike Ford 2 hits, solo HR.
