S.T. Game 10. Minor League Pitchers can’t hold lead, Yanks fall 10-4.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yanks (6-3-1) built a 4-2 lead but some pitchers ticketed for the minors could not hold it and the Yanks fell 10-4 on Sunday.

Brett Gardner had an RBI double.

Rosell Herrera went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI and the way he is playing, he could beat out Tyler Wade for the last (utility) spot on the team. Herrera can play all three OF positions as well as 2B, SS and 3B.

Something concerning is that guys like Mike Tauchman and Gary Sanchez don’t have a hit yet and that Tyler Wade is 1 for 16, that hit being a HR. Kyle Higashioka is 1 for 11.

You would like some bats to wake up soon.

Pitching line:

Hale 1 2/3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 W, 1 K.  19.29.  Not a good outing for Hale.
Reeves 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K.   Faced one batter and struck him out.  0.00
Otero 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K.  0.00

Kriske (H, 2) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 0 K. 2.45  Don’t sleep on him, either.
Yajure (L, 0-1; H, 1)  1 1/3 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 1 W, 4 K.   11.57
Ort (BS, 1) 2/3 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 1 W, 2 K.  Gave up a grand slam.    27.00
Rosa 1 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 2 W, 1 K.  9.00

S.T. Game 2. Andujar HRs, but Yanks lose 9-7.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yanks (0-2) lost to Tampa Bay 9-7 in their S.T. game today.

Good news: Miguel Andujar homered. Jonathan Loaisiga had a 1-2-3 inning. He is competing for the #5 starter job or a spot starter/long relief position.

There weren’t too many “major leaguers” who played. It was mostly minor leaguers. The only possible MLB players were Tyler Wade, Andujar, Luke Voit, maybe Thairo Estrada or David Hale, and that’s about it.

It came out today that Voit’s injury that sabotaged the second half of 2019 for him was worse than thought. He basically ripped everything. 3 ligaments on both sides of his groin had to be repaired in the off season. In the first half of last year, he had 17 HR and 50 RBI. Do the math. 34 and 100.

He feels fine now. Good sign. Even lost a little weight to make him a little more flexible. But that injury wasn’t just a sports hernia. It explains the big drop off in the second half.

Two hits for Chris Gittens today after he homered yesterday.

Estrada with a hit and an RBI.

Two hits and 2 RBI for OF Trey Amburgey. I like this kid. Righty hitter, 25. Hit .274-22-62 for AAA SWB last year. But no room for him at MLB level right now.

Pitching line:

Loaisiga 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K   0.00  Nice
Hale 2/3 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 0 W, 1 K.  40.50   Not so hot.
Lyons 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K. Threw a WP that let a run in. 0.00
Schmidt 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 W, 0 K. 0.00  A top prospect.
Nelson 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 W, 0 K.   0.00
Yajure 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 1 K.   0.00
Vizcaino (H,1) 1 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 0 W, 1 K.  18.00
Abreu (H,1)  1 IP, 1 R, 0 H, 2 W, 1 K.  9.00
Lane (L; BS) 2/3 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 H, 2 W, 0 K.  27.00
Reeves 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K, 0.00

C Wynston Sawyer, who spent last year (43 Games) with the Twins AAA team, made two errors, I didn’t see the one, but the other was quite embarrassing.

Gerrit Cole will pitch tomorrow (Monday) night.

Yankees release Ellsbury, DFA Bird & Cortes.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yankees had to set their 40-man roster before the Rule 5 draft and wanted to protect a couple of youngsters from that draft.

In order to do so, they made some moves.

The first was that they released Jacoby Ellsbury. In doing so, they are eating the $21MM he is owed for 2020 and also paying him $5MM for a 2021 buyout. They are eating $26MM and yes, that money for 2020 still will count against the cap. Ellsbury didn’t play at all for the Yankees in 2018 and 2019.

Ellsbury did play for them 2014-2017, with his best year being his first, in 2014 (.271-16-70 with 39 SB, OPS+ 111). So the Yanks got NOTHING from him for the last three years of his contract and had to buy out 2021.

The Yanks also DFA’d Greg Bird and Nestor Cortes, Jr.

Bird hit .261 with 11 HR in 46 games at the end of 2015, filling in for the injured Mark Teixeira but has had trouble with injuries since. He missed all of 2016 due to injury, hit .190 in 48 games in 2017, .199 in 82 games in 2018 and was just 6 for 35 in 10 games in 2019. His big highlight was his HR in Game 3 of the 2017 ALDS off of Andrew Miller that won the game for the Yanks 1-0 and kept them alive in the playoffs that year.

Cortes, Jr. was 5-1, 5.67 for the Yankees in 2019, ERA+ 79, in one start and 32 relief appearances.

The Yanks added Estevan Florial, Deivi Garcia, Luis Gil, Brooks Kriske, Luis Medina, Nick Nelson and Miguel Yajure to the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 draft.

Florial: 22 on Nov. 25. OF lefty bat. .237-8-38 at High A Tampa in 2019.
Garcia: 20. 5-9, 4.28 combined A+/AA/AAA in 2019. 165 K in 111.1 IP.  21 starts, 5 relief.
Gil: 21. 5-5, 2.72 at A/A+ combined in 2019. 20 starts. 123 K in 96 IP.
Kriske: 25. 3-3, 2.08 at A+/AA combined in 2019. 12 saves. 80 K in 60.2 IP.
Medina: 20. 1-8, 5.47 at A/A+ combined in 2019. 22 starts. 127 K in 103.2 IP.
Nelson: 24 on Dec. 5. 8-3, 2.81 at A+/AA/AAA in 2019. 17 starts, 1 relief. 114 K in 89.2 IP.
Yajure: 21. 9-6, 2.14 at A+/AA in 2019. 20 starts, 4 relief. 133 K in 138.2 IP.

Trenton (with Severino) loses 7-2, Series tied at 1. Yanks’ magic # decreases. Ex-Yankee C Charlie Silvera dies.

cropped-the-stadium-facade.jpg

AA Trenton lost 7-2 to Bowie last night and their Eastern League Championship series is now tied at one game apiece.

Luis Severino, on rehab, started and gave up 4 runs, 3 of them unearned, in 3 2/3 innings of work.

C Kellin Deglan 2 hits, RBI, but an error.

Severino (Loss) 3 2/3 IP, 4 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 0 W, 4 K
Yajure 4 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 3 W, 6 K.
Kriske 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 2 K.

The Yanks (MLB) were rained out and have a DH today (straight old-fashioned DH this afternoon) but their magic #’s did drop. The magic # to clinch the division outright (no tiebreakers) is now 8 over Tampa Bay. They have an 8 1/2 game lead over the Rays with 16 games to go. The magic number just to get into the playoffs is 7.

The Yanks also now have the best record in baseball, by 1/2 game over Houston (Houston has tiebreaker). The Yanks have 1 1/2 game lead over the Dodgers (Yanks have tiebreaker).

Charlie Silvera, Yogi Berra’s backup C in the early 1950s, died at the age of 94 on Sept. 7. Silvera was with the Yankees 1948-1956, and ended his career with the Cubs in 1957. As Yogi’s backup, Silvera never got into more than 58 games in a season, and in most seasons, never even got into 25 games a year. He was, however, one of the few Yankees that was on the team for EACH of the five consecutive WS they won from 1949-1953. He played for the Yankees in six different WS Championship years (1949-1953, 1956).

In 1949, Silvera got his most playing time, playing in 58 games and hitting .315. In the only WS game he played in, he went 0 for 2.

In his ten years in the majors, Silvera only played in 227 games, hitting .282-1-52 in 482 at bats. OPS+ 86. His only MLB HR was hit in the first game of a DH on July 4, 1951 vs. Washington at the old, original Yankee Stadium.
